An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of Change and Growth in Middle-aged Married Women's Life Who Chose to Become Counselors

Abstract

|
The aim of this study is to research the life of women who chose to become counselors at mid-life by carefully observing their experience in learning counseling psychology eventually to help their learning courses going on and overcome any difficulties.
For the research method, I chose Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis(IPA) to determine a commonness between
individuals experience. The study participants are five women who finished studying counseling course in their middle-age. I directly interviewed them, collected data and made a conclusion by making a remark on the manuscripts I made.
According to the research result, all of the participants encountered counseling psychology at the time of crisis in their life and they could have intense experience through it. All of them are in their mid-age, so the relationship with their children somewhat affected them when they started studying. With this as an evidence, we can assume that counseling psychology can be helpful for raising children. Also, counseling psychology helped participants to improve their attitude toward life and self. They came to understand their desire and needs, gain flexible thinking skills and rational view of value. Furthermore, these changes led them into new relationship with family; separating them from family of origin helped them have better relationship with spouses and children. Even with neighbors, they could have more meaningful relationship with small group of people in an active manner. Through this study, we can understand how counseling psychology help mid-age women to raise their children better and have a great change in their lives with positive self-imaging. Also, according to this study, a person who experiences a meaningful change thorough counseling psychology tries to enter school to study more even in her mid-age because she wanted to share her experience with others as a counselor. As this is a qualitative study, only few people were participated so there is a limitation that it cannot cover all the mid-age women counselors.
